Ethiopian doctors have successfully performed a surgery on a girl with eight limbs recently in the country's capital Addis Ababa. It is the first case of such surgery performed by native doctors in Ethiopia. 에티오피아의 의사들이 최근 수도 아디스아바바에서 팔다리가 8개 달린 소녀에 대한 수술에 성공했다. 에티오피아 출신 의사들이 자국에서 이러한 수술에 성공한 건 처음이다.
Seventeen-year-old Werkitu Dababa was born a "parasitic twin" with four arm and four legs. Among the eight limbs, two are underdeveloped arms and two are legs protruding from her pelvis. This deformity only occurs one in half million births. 열일곱 살인 웨르키투 다바바 양은 팔 4개, 다리가 4개인 ‘기생 쌍둥이(parasitic twin)’로 태어났다. 8개의 팔다리 중에는 발육이 불완전한 팔 2개와 골반에서 튀어나온 다리 2개가 포함돼 있다. 이런 기형아가 태어날 확률은 50만 분의 1이다.
Werkitu Dababa underwent an eight-hour surgery at the CURE Ethiopia Children's Hospital (CECH) on June 27 after extensive testings. A team of Ethiopian surgeons took part in the surgery. 웨르키투 다바바 양은 광범위한 검사를 받은 뒤 6월 27일(현지시간) 에티오피아 아동 치료 병원에서 8시간에 걸쳐 수술을 받았다. 에티오피아 국적의 의사들로 꾸려진 의료진이 수술에 참여했다.
They removed the parasitic twin's limbs as well as internal organs from Dababa's body. Presently Werkitu Dababa is in good condition. 의료진은 다바바 양의 몸에서 기생 쌍둥이의 팔다리와 장기들을 제거했다. 현재 다바바 양의 건강은 좋은 상태이다.
She was very pleased that the surgery went on very well. 다바바 양은 수술이 성공한 것에 대해 굉장히 기뻐했다.
"I thought that everybody was just like me when I was a kid. But I began to realize that I was different from others when people made fun of my appearance in my third and fourth grade. I could not take the mocking any more after my seventh grade and I dropped out of school. I have been staying at home since then," said Werkitu Dababa. #[웨르키투 다바바] “어렸을 때에는 모든 사람이 나와 비슷하다고 생각했었다. 하지만 3~4학년 때 사람들이 나를 놀리는 걸 보고, 내가 다른 사람들과 다르다는 걸 깨닫기 시작했다. 7학년이 되고 나서는 더 이상 놀림을 참을 수 없었고, 학교를 중퇴했다. 그 이후로 그냥 집에만 있었다.”
The hospital is now giving psychological counseling to Dababa to help her get rid of the bad memory brought by the deformity. 현재 병원 측은 다바바 양이 기형으로 인해 얻은 아픈 기억들을 잊을 수 있도록 돕기 위해 정신과 상담도 제공하고 있다.
Parasitic twins occur when a twin embryo begins developing in utero, but the pair do not fully separate, and one embryo maintains dominant development at the expense of the other. 기생 쌍둥이는 쌍둥이 배아가 자궁 내에서 성장을 시작하면서 둘이 완전히 분리되지 않을 때 발생한다. 하나의 배아가 다른 배아를 희생시키면서 우세하게 성장을 계속하는 것이다.
The undeveloped twin is defined as parasitic because it is incompletely formed or wholly dependent on the body functions of the complete fetus. 쌍둥이 중 제대로 성장하지 못한 한 쪽은 그 형태가 불완전하거나, 또는 완벽한 태아의 신체 기능에 전적으로 의존하기 때문에 ‘기형’으로 정의된다.
