| 신종 독거미에 2명 사망, ‘물리면 죽는다’ 공포감 확산 |

Large, hairy, biting spiders have sparked fear in a community in remote northeast India after several people were bitten and two died following treatment from witch doctors.
몸집이 크고, 털이 잔뜩 난, 사람을 물어뜯는 거미가 인도 북동부 외딴 곳의 한 마을을 공포에 빠뜨렸다. 거미에 물린 주민 몇 명 가운데 2명이 주술사의 치료 후 사망한 것.
The two people died in Tinsukia district after witch doctors used razor blades to drain the wounds.
인도 아삼 주(州) 틴수키아 지역에서 이 거미에 물린 주민 2명이 주술사에게 면도날로 상처의 고름을 빼는 처치 후 사망했다.
It is currently unclear whether they died from the treatment or the bites, but officials are urging the local population not to panic.
이들의 사망 원인이 주술사의 치료 때문인지, 거미 독 때문인지는 아직 명확하지 않다. 하지만 당국은 주민들에게 겁먹지 말라고 호소하고 있다.
"This species is not a poisonous which can kill people. The poison can be painful, but it can be cured. So, from the district administration we appeal to all the people, not to be carried away by any kind of wrong publicity," said Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia Jogesh Baruah.

“이 거미 종(種)은 사람을 죽일 수 있을 만큼의 독성이 없다. 거미 독 때문에 고통스러울 수는 있지만 치료 할 수 있다. 지방 정부는 잘못된 정보 때문에 사람들이 동요하지 않기를 호소하는 바이다.”
Forensic expert Mridul Gogoi said the poison of the spider, though it caused a lot of pain, could be treated by general medical practitioners in the state.
법의학 전문가 므리둘 고고이는 거미의 독이 굉장한 고통을 유발하지만, 일반 의사들도 치료할 수 있다고 말했다.
"Burning and pain is locally, not to worry by the general people. It will be treated well by the common medical officer or doctors in Assam only," he said.

“국부적으로 화끈거리고 통증이 있지만 걱정하지 않아도 된다. 아삼 주(州)에 있는 일반 의사들도 쉽게 치료할 수 있는 수준이다.”
But victims of the bites said the pain is severe: "When I saw the spider, I tried to catch it and throw it away. It bit me and the wound has gone black and is bleeding. It burns and is very painful," said Mina Kurmi.
하지만 거미에 물린 피해자들은 고통이 극심하다고 말한다.

“거미가 보이길래 잡아서 던져버렸다. 그러다 거미에게 물렸고, 상처 부위가 검게 변하더니 피가 났다. 화끈거리면서 굉장히 아팠다.”
Villagers are keeping lights on at night and remaining vigilant to potential attacks from the spiders, which some believe to be a previously unknown species of tarantula.
거미에게 물릴까봐 두려워하는 주민들은 밤에도 불을 켜놓고 바짝 경계하고 있다. 일부 주민들은 이 거미가 지금까지 알려지지 않은 새로운 타란툴라 종(種)일 거라 추정하고 있다.
(*타란툴라 : 세계에서 가장 몸집이 큰 거미류로 원실젖거미하목(Mygalomorphae) 새잡이거미과(Theraposidae)에 속한다. 타란툴라 거미류는 사냥감에 이빨을 꽂아 독액을 주입하여 마비시키고 체액을 빨아먹는다. 독액은 인간에게 그리 치명적이지 않기 때문에 애완용으로 기르는 사례도 많지만 아프리카와 오스트레일리아, 남아메리카 등지에 서식하는 몇몇 타란툴라 종은 사람의 생명을 위협할 정도의 매우 치명적인 독성을 가지고 있다.)
