Two American students were criticised by New Zealand authorities on Monday (June 11) for being unprepared, after getting lost in the wilderness of New Zealand's Southern Alps in a nine-day ordeal which sparked a massive search operation. ´ºÁú·£µå °æÂûÀÌ 11ÀÏ ¼´ø¾ËÇÁ½º»ê¸Æ¿¡¼ µî»êÀ» Áñ±â´Ù Æø¼³·Î ÀÎÇØ 9Àϰ£ °í¸³µÅ ´ë´ëÀûÀÎ ¼ö»ö ÀÛ¾÷À» ¹úÀÌ°Ô ¸¸µç ¹Ì±¹ÀÎ ´ëÇлý 2¸íÀ» ºñ³Çß´Ù. Erica Klintworth and Alec Brown, both aged 21, who were in New Zealand on a study exchange with the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, walked out of the bush themselves on Sunday (June 10). ¹Ì±¹ À§½ºÄܽŴëÇб³ ½ºÆ¼ºì½ºÆ÷ÀÎƮķÆÛ½º¿¡ ÀçÇÐ ÁßÀÎ ¿¡¸®Ä« Ŭ¸°Æ®¿ö½º(21¡¤¿©)¿Í ¾Ë·º ºê¶ó¿î(21¡¤³²)Àº ±³È¯Çлý ÇÁ·Î±×·¥À¸·Î ´ºÁú·£µå¿¡ ü·ù ÁßÀ̾ú´Ù. Local media reported that the students had intended to spend just a couple of days tramping the rugged New Zealand Alps, when a snowstorm hit with temperatures dropping to minus 8 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit). The pair were trapped and forced to survive on meagre rations of one biscuit and jelly per day while huddling in hot springs to keep warm. ´ºÁú·£µå ¾ð·ÐÀº ÇлýµéÀÌ ¹ÙÀ§Åõ¼ºÀÌÀÇ ¼´ø¾ËÇÁ½º»ê¸Æ¿¡¼ ÇÏÀÌÅ·ÇÏ¸ç ¸çÄ¥¸¸ ¸Ó¹«¸£·Á°í °èȹÇß´Ù°í º¸µµÇß´Ù. "We were wearing hoodies, and like, just not the type of thing that you want to be wearing and have when you're stuck in a mountain storm. But I think when it came down to it, we were a lot more prepared than everybody thought," said Klintworth. New Zealand police criticised the pair for being ill-prepared for the weather, and said an expensive search operation could have been avoided if they had left written intentions. ´ºÁú·£µå °æÂûÀº ±â»ó ¾ÇÈ¿¡ ´ëºñÇØ Áغñ¸¦ Á¦´ë·Î ÇÏÁö ¾Ê¾Ò´Ù¸ç µÎ ÇлýÀ» ºñ³Çß´Ù. ¶ÇÇÑ ¸ñÀûÁö¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ³»¿ëÀ» ±Û·Î ³²°å´õ¶ó¸é ¸¹Àº ºñ¿ëÀÌ µç ¼ö»ö ÀÛ¾÷Àº ÇÇÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ¾úÀ» °ÍÀ̶ó°í ¸»Çß´Ù.
"It is frustrating. I mean, there's a lot of work gone into this operation. You know, taxpayers' dollars, the use of a helicopter, and obviously, you know, the search and rescue volunteers that we use. A lot of their time's been used up over the weekend, and you know, perhaps needlessly," Sergeant Sean Judd said.
