An unusual snowfall blanketed most parts of South Africa's commercial city of Johannesburg on Tuesday (August 7). 남아프리카공화국 경제중심지 요하네스버그에 7일(이하 현지시간) 때아닌 눈이 내려 도시 대부분을 덮었다.
The last time snow made an appearance in the city was back in 2007, bringing it to a total of 12 times in the last 103 years according to the South African Weather Services. 남아공 기상청에 따르면 이곳의 눈은 2007년 이후 처음. 지난 103년 동안에도 총 12번 밖에 내리지 않았다.
Excited South Africans who are used to sunny weather stopped their cars along the road to catch a glimpse of the rare snow fall. 화창한 날씨에 익숙한 남아공 사람들은 눈을 보고 들뜬 마음에 길가에 차를 세우고 오랜만에 내린 눈 구경에 나섰다.
"When I first saw the flakes I was at home, I couldn't believe it because it hardly happens but before I heard everybody on Facebook speaking about it but now that I came, when I was coming by I saw everybody stopping their cars and so I am like let me stop as well and experience the snow," said Johannesburg resident Adalberto Patricio. [아달베르토 패트리시오 / 요하네스버그 시민] “눈이 내리는 걸 처음 본 곳은 집이에요. 거의 일어나지 않는 일이라 믿겨지지 않았어요. 그런데 페이스북을 봤더니 온통 눈 얘기 뿐이잖아요. 그래서 이곳으로 나왔죠. 사람들이 모두 차를 세우고 눈을 구경하고 있네요. 저도 눈 세상을 만끽해야 겠어요.”
For many, they were seeing snow for the very first time. 태어나서 처음 눈을 본 사람도 많았다.
"I am seeing my snow for the first time in my entire life and I am excited, I never thought I would ever see something like this," said Samule Mathetsa. [사무엘 마테사(Samule Mathetsa) / 요하네스버그 시민] “저는 태어나서 처음으로 눈을 보고 있습니다. 너무 좋아요. 이런걸 보게 될 거라고 생각도 해 본 적 없었거든요.”
"We are not used to such things it's something that is very exciting for us, we are not used to so much snow. It's just a little bit but we are not used to it. It is exciting." said Nokwazi Skhakhane. [녹와지 하헤인(Nokwazi Skhakhane) / 요하네스버그 시민] “우리는 이런 상황에 정말 익숙하지가 않습니다. 그래서 아주 신이 나네요. 눈이 그렇게 많이 내린 건 아니지만 낯선 광경이에요. 즐거워요.”
Snow is expected to fall in many parts of the country until Wednesday. 이 눈은 남아공 전역에 8일까지 계속해서 내릴 예정이다.
