Forest officials on Sunday (June 03) killed a leopard in self-defence after it injured 13 people in north eastern India's Assam state.
인도 북동부 아삼 주(州)의 삼림당국이 3일(이하 현지시간) 13명을 다치게 한 표범을 포획하는 과정에서 자기방어를 위해 표범을 사살했다.
The wild cat entered a residential zone in Dibrugarh district of the province at around 6 a.m. (IST) and attacked an old person and four others who rushed to save the elderly person.
이 표범은 인도 표준시로 3일 오전 6시 경 아삼 주 디브루가르 지역의 한 주택 지대에 들어선 뒤 노인 한 명을 공격했으며, 이 노인을 구하려 달려든 다른 4명도 공격했다.
Forest officials reached the area and after a long struggle located the hiding animal and fired two shot of tranquillisers at the leopard.
현장에 도착한 삼림당국 직원들은 오랫동안 애를 쓴 끝에 숨어있는 표범을 찾아냈고, 마취총 두 발을 발사했다.
A crowd of locals gathered at the spot to see the leopard - falling to sleep under the dose of tranquillisers, but the public noise alerted the wild cat who further attacked and injured 13 people including two forest officials.
주민들이 마취총을 맞고 잠든 표범을 보기 위해 현장에 잔뜩 모여들었다. 하지만 사람들이 시끄럽게 떠드는 바람에 표범이 깨어났고, 표범은 사람들을 또 다시 공격했다. 이로 인해 삼림당국 직원 2명을 포함해 총 13명이 다쳤다.
"Thirteen people were injured during the entire operation including two forest officials and one security personnel. The incident took place at around five or six in the morning," said Division Forest Official, Gaurav Joshi.

“포획 작전 전 과정에서 삼림당국 직원 2명과 보안요원 1명을 포함해 13명이 다쳤다. 사고는 아침 5~6시 경 발생했다.”
In self-defence, a forest official opened fire at the leopard, which succumbed to the bullet injuries.
표범의 공격을 막아내는 과정에서 한 삼림당국 직원이 스스로를 지키기 위해 표범에게 총탄을 쐈고, 총상을 입은 표범은 쓰러졌다.
"We had used two doses of tranquillisers and it takes 10 minute to show the effect on the animal. People gathered around it and started shouting. We had to kill in self defence," said Joshi.

“우린 마취총 두 발을 사용했고, 10분 정도 효과가 있는 듯했다. 그런데 사람들이 표범 주변으로 몰려들어 소리를 지르기 시작했다. 우린 스스로를 지키기 위해 표범을 죽여야 했다.”
The relationship between wild felines and man has not been very cordial and frequent conflicts occur between them. Attacks by wild animals on humans in India are on the rise due to the depleting forest cover and shortage of prey in the wild, which force the animals to stray from the jungles.
현재 고양잇과 동물인 야생 표범과 인간과의 관계는 굉장히 좋지 않아 자주 충돌하고 있다. 인도에서는 야생 동물이 사람을 습격하는 일이 늘고 있는데, 숲지대가 줄어들고 야생의 먹잇감이 부족해지면서 야생동물들이 숲속을 벗어날 수밖에 없기 때문이다.
Development pressures and encroachment into forest areas have brought humans and the wild cats into conflict, and there have been reports of villagers brutally killing the animals.
숲 지역에 대한 개발 요구와 잠식으로 인해 인간과 야생 고양잇과 동물 사이에는 갈등이 발생하고 있으며, 주민들이 동물들을 잔혹하게 죽이고 있는 것으로 보고되고 있다.
