A baby killer whale has been born at SeaWorld San Diego. It's the sixth successful killer whale birth in the park's nearly 49-year history. Kasatka, estimated to be 37, gave birth at Shamu Stadium at 6:33 a.m. (1433GMT) on February 14, 2013.
미국 캘리포니아 주(州) 샌디에이고의 해양테마파크 ‘씨월드(SeaWorld)’에서 아기 범고래가 태어났다. 씨월드의 49년 역사상 범고래가 태어난 것은 이번이 6번째다. 서른일곱 살로 추정되는 카삿카(Kasatka)는 샤무 스타디움에서 현지 시각 14일 오전 6시 33분에 출산했다.
After a nearly 18-month gestation, Kasatka's calf, estimated to weigh between 300 and 350 pounds and measure between 6 and 7 feet, was born in Shamu Stadium's main show pool following a little more than an hour of labor. Seconds later, the baby whale instinctively swam to the water's surface to take its first breath. The park's zoological team members report the mother and baby appear to be healthy, but as with any newborn, the first few days are critical. The calf's sex is yet to be determined.
카삿카는 임신 18개월째에 1시간이 조금 넘는 산고 끝에 샤무 스타디움의 메인 쇼장에서 새끼를 낳았다. 새끼의 몸무게는 300~350파운드(약 136~159kg)에 몸길이는 6~7피트(약 183~213cm)이다. 아기 범고래는 태어나자마자 본능적으로 헤엄쳐 수면 위로 나와 첫 숨을 내쉬었다. 씨월드의 직원들은 어미와 새끼 둘 다 건강하다고 보고했다. 하지만 모든 새끼들이 그러하듯 태어나고 며칠 동안은 매우 조심해야 한다고 덧붙였다. 새끼의 성별은 아직 감별되지 않았다.
"Now from here, we're going to have round the clock care with our veterinary team and animal trainers to monitor both Kasatka and the calf's health," said animal training supervisor Kristi Burtis.

This is Kasatka's fourth calf. The most recent previous birth occurred in 2004 when Kasatka gave birth to Kalia. Kasatka's other offspring are Takara (born 1991) and Nakai (born 2001).
카삿카는 이번에 4번째 새끼를 낳았다. 이번을 제외한 가장 최근의 출산은 2004년으로 당시 태어난 새끼의 이름은 칼리아(Kalia)다. 나머지 둘의 이름은 타카라(Takara·1991년 생)와 나카이(Nakai·2001년 생)다.
